CivicPress is WordPress for the US Government

CivicPress is aiming to bring the Gutenberg block editor to the US government.

CivicPress was built by the team at Lone Rock Point, an agency in Boston. This is a Full Site Editing theme and is built according to the standards of the US Web Design System (USWDS). That system was created about 10 years ago and provides principles, guidance, and code that makes it easier to build accessible, mobile-friendly government websites.

I’ve seen this kind of targeted approach work very well before. Around 2010, the Drupal community provided targeted themes and tools for the US government and was able to capture a large segment of that market.

This screenshot below shows the CivicPress theme inside the WordPress Site Editor.

CivicPress comes bundled with a WordPress plugin that can take advantage of the search.gov services for your site search.

CivicPress has undergone a WCAG 2.2 accessibility audit to provide an out of the box accessibility baseline. It also comes pre-installed with the Accessibility Checker plugin that provides accessibility error and warning notifications right on your post and/or page edit screen. And it has Gravity Forms, one of the few forms extensions to take accessibility guidelines very seriously.
